Designer spotlight: Sarah Richardson

Good morning!! You might know her if you are a regular watcher of HGTV. I personally did not know  Sarah Richardson until recently, and although her style does not reflect my own,  I very much appreciate her streamlined style for which she is extremely well known. She has perfected a more transitional look, a very clean, very streamlined but elegant and livable look. She has an excellent sense of both scale and color and I think in all of her rooms she has shown that she can design not only gorgeous spaces but ones that you can imagine easily living in.
She stared her career as a merchandiser at only 15 years old and quickly rose thought the ranks to become an in demand and sought after designer both here in the U.S. and in Canada. I will admit she was not in my "one word designer repertoire" amongst such names as Bunny, Charlotte, David, Ralph, etc.....but I do think she is one talented lady! She takes a practical and functional approach to design and I love the way she works such interesting fabrics and colors into her signature rooms. She isn't afraid to go bold with fabric and wallpaper and likes to use fun, geometric prints. I like her take on more modern, updated young feeling interiors. They feel very modern and fresh.  So lets take a look at some of her work.....

This is a great palette..the brown with touches of pale blue, a very inviting room
Really like the way she broke this sitting arrangement up with a bench and an over sized wing chair...the space is great looking
Something about a soft creamy ivory room that makes it feel so inviting and cozy
Beautiful elegant bathroom
The crisp navy works every time!
The pea green against the white is very sharp looking
Love the soft colors here....so sweet!
This room was beautifully put together
Great, clean aesthetic, love this!
Cozy nook in a girls room.....
Who doesn't love a cozy little nook like this?
Love the fun print on the bed while everything else is kept soft and quiet
This is a great looking small monochromatic kitchen, love the fabric on the barstools
Fun fabrics in this pink and green nursery
Love the navy and white, very sharp
Would never have thought of teal in a dining room...but it works beautifully here
Gorgeous kitchen, with the softest green painted cabinets and marble floors
Really like the bold geometric wallpaper here, it adds so much warmth to the room
Another view
Just the right punch of color in an otherwise all white room is gorgeous
A pale gold room gets a small jolt of color from the painting.....very pretty room
An elegant dining setting, there is that fixture again!
This is a kitchen meant for some serious entertaining!
This is a beautiful classic kitchen
Love this family room..the navy is timeless and rich
A pair of chaises, I wouldn't have thought of that, but they look great
Love this print...its a lot of fun and adds a lot of interest to the room
Beautiful sleek dark kitchen is stunning
Love this elegant master bath
Soft shimmery gray toned master bedroom
Love the soft crisp colors and lines here, just beautiful
Stunning tufted banquette.....a truly beautiful room
Elegant dining room high in the sky
Gorgeous transitional kitchen
Elegant bathroom gets nickel accents against the white marble..timeless!
What a pretty and delicate little dressing spot!
The soft reds and cream work so nicely here...love the seating area
I love how the two chairs have a little table...like a little cafe setting for morning coffee!
How sweet is this babies room? I love the floral fabric on the chair......

So what do you think? Were you already familiar with her work? I really enjoyed discovering her impressive body of work....I tend to focus more on designers whose work tends to follow my own personal style but this was a refreshing change, I must say. Looking at her work is like looking at a freshly folded basket of laundry, it is  crisp, beautiful and fresh looking! I think she has great style and a wonderful eye for non fussy, elegant and simple decor. Would love to know what you think and if you have a favorite room! Have a Memorial day weekend!

  3. Thanks for the great collection of Sarah Richardson rooms. I only learned who she was in the last couple of years when I found her on HGTV. I really love her style and there isn't much I don't like in any of the rooms she designs. So fresh yet not over the top. Loved seeing all these photos in one spot.

  4. I have watched her off and on over the years. I enjoy her sense of humor and she chooses great people to work with. I was most interested in her personal farm house makeover. Interesting but not anything that I would have done. Well, maybe I would borrow a couple of ideas, just do them less formally.

  6. Not only am I totally obsessed with her design style, but I love all of her shows...she's so endearing. I DVR them all and relish having a lazy afternoon to savor every design detail. As you know I love a neutral color palette, and am so drawn to the creamy ivory room, and the nook...heaven for curling up with a good book!! These images are a visual feast, as always!! Hope you're having a wonderful holiday weekend Tina ~

  9. Tina I have been following Sarah's career since her very first show on TV,Room Service. She has since done three more shows and now she is working on her summer home, which might be my favorite!! I love everything about her design aesthetics. The use of old with new, painted with wood, crisp color pallete. I would say she hits the nail on the head for me almost every time!! I had such a good time perfusing all of the above images. I had seen them all before, but I never ever get tired of viewing her work. You made my Saturday morning!! Thank you for all your hard work gathering such wonderful images. Happy Weekend,Kathysue

  13. I have been a fan of hers for years. She comes from my own beautiful province of Ontario. If only you could see the before photos of some of these homes! That one room with the mirror off center on the fireplace? That was one ugly 70's brady bunch home but when she got through with it it was fantastic! Sarah's House was the Canadian series and you should be able to find it on her website!

  14. Thank you so much for showcasing Sarah Richardson's work. I have followed her career for years, and have had the honor of meeting her in person. Sarah's skillful mix of fabrics, wall coverings and unexpected elements infuse her rooms with sophistication and personality. Her designs are never predictable, and always memorable. Sarah's an icon of Canadian Interior Design. Her amazing talent and signature style is equally appreciated not only by her fans here in Canada, but by an extensive audience nation wide - and is so well deserved!

  23. Tina,

I am familiar with Sarah Richardson and watched her years ago on HGTV Room Service as well. Another great Designer is Candice Olsen of "Devine Design" who enjoys a little more sparkle, glitz and glamour in her designs.

Great thing is we always learn something by watching and some things catch our attention or are what we've been looking for. Fun post.

  24. This is another completely new name for me, one I am definitely glad to learn. Several of the bedrooms and kitchens are simply beautiful, while retaining the practical component that is so important.

Her style is very much one I like, although I would incorporate a few touches of more traditional, older work. But overall, her crisp, non-frilly aesthetic is one I embrace.

Sending you wishes for a happy weekend,
    tp

  28. As a Canadian(& Ontarian), I have definitely seen a lot of Sarah Richardson's work! I appreciate the crisp and serene nature of her designs - although I wouldn't say that her style reflects mine. Actually I don't even know what to call my style - it's all over the place and I have yet to find a real definition of what I like.

  29. I love her style. I would gladly hand her the keys to my house and let her decorate it any way she chose.

  30. I was already aware of Sarah Richardson's work via HGTV. She and Candice Olson's are the best shows HGTV have right now. Can't see enough of Sarah's shows, and hope they tape & air some new ones soon.

  35. Sarah Richardson, along with Brian Gluckstein, are my two favourite Canadian designers. Sarah's style can be summed up as "casual elegance", it sounds like an oxymoron, but when you look at those pictures, this is exactly what it is. I am very much inspired by her clean lined yet very classic choices of furniture and I feel her style is very relevant for today. I love watching her show and see how her vision comes together. Often, at the planning stages, I frown at her fabric choices, but then it all makes sense. I love also that she shops at thrift stores and sees potential in what most of us would think as a humdrum piece.

  40. I agree with comments which say that Sarah Richardson and Candice Olson are the best shows on HGTV. I'm ready for some new episodes from both of these designers!! I love watching the reruns of their shows, too, but there are only so many times one needs to see the same episode. Please, some new episodes!!

  46. We get Sarah's shows here in New Zealand from time to time and I find her inspirational. If I won the lottery I would fly her out here to do a house for me. Failing that I will just study as much of her work as I can in the hopes I can emulate her style!

  51. This is such a great collection of wonderfully designed rooms. I love every example you have shown especially the kitchens. While I do love the vibrancy of different colors, I prefer a home that has softer shades or color palettes with pops of bolder hues. Anyway, thank you for posting this amazing collection. I have kept in mind several ideas from all these.
